County Reminds Public of Swine Flu Recommendations

Grundy County Health Dept Swine Flu Update for April 28th, 2009

The Grundy County Health Department reminds the public to be vigilant for prevention of the swine flu. 

No cases are currently reported in Illinois.

However, the public is reminded to complete frequent hand washing of 20-30 seconds with warm water and soap.

Do not go to work, school or be among the public if you have a fever.

For relief of fever, take acetaminophen (Tylenol) or non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (Ibuprofen)

Aspirin or aspirin containing products(e.g. bismuth subsalicylate-Pepto Bismol) should not be administered to any confirmed or suspected ill case of swine flu influenza for ageds 18 years and younger due to the risk of Reye syndrome.

Antiviral treatment with either zanamivir (Relenza) or oseltamivir (Tamiflu).

Antiviral doses and scheduled recommended for treatment of the swine flu are the same as those recommended for seasonal flu.

DO NOT take the antiviral drugs if you do not have signs or symptoms of the flu.

It is only effective when you have symptoms.

Taking when you do not have symptoms may decrease the supply of antiviral drugs and may not be effective when you really need it.
