VITAL RECORDS

Birth, Death and Marriage Records

Some birth records are available beginning with the year 1877. Some death records are available beginning with the year 1878. Some marriage licenses begin with the year 1841. Requests for copies of birth and death records should include the following information:

Certified Birth Records

* Name at birth
* Date of birth
* Father's name
* Mother's maiden name
* Place of birth (city and state)

Certified Death Records

* Name of deceased
* Place death occurred
* Date of death

Certified Marriage Records

* Name of bride
* Name of groom
* Date of marriage
* Place of marriage

The fee for certified copies of marriage licenses is $7.00 for the first copy and $4.00 for additional copies of the same certificate. The fee for certified copies of birth certificates is $20.00 for the first copy and $4.00 for additional copies of the same certificate. The fee for certified copies of death certificates is $15.00 for the first copy and $6.00 for additional copies of the same certificate.

Illinois law provides that copies of birth records may only be obtained by the individual if 18 years of age, by the parents, or other legal representative. Death records may be obtained by any person having a personal or property right interest in the record or by his duly authorized agent. Click here for Application for Search of Vital Records Files.

Requests in writing for certified copies of vital records must be accompanied with a money order and a photocopy of your driver's license or state ID. Mail to:

Marriage License Information

1. Both parties must be 18 years of age in order to obtain a license.

2. Persons who are 16 or 17 years of age may obtain a license only with consent of both parents.

3. You must show valid driver's license, State ID or valid Passport.

4. If divorced, certified copies of divorce decrees are required.

5. If previous marriage has been dissolved by the death of a spouse, a certified death certificate is required.

6. You may obtain a marriage license Mon-Fri 8:00am - 4:00pm.


The cost of a marriage license in Grundy County is $30.00, payable in cash. Both parties must be present when applying for the license.

A marriage license becomes effective one day from the date issued and is valid for 60 days from the date it becomes effective. A Marriage license is valid only in the county in which it is issued.
