How can I get the speed limit on my road lowered?
Different agencies have jurisdiction over different roads. If you live on a state road,
contact IDOT at 815-732-6251. If you live on a township road, you must contact your road
commissioner and place your request with him. The road commissioner must be the one to request a
speed study be performed on a township road. If you live on a county road, you may contact and
place your request for a speed study with the highway department.

Who do I call to get a "school bus stop ahead" sign by my house?
Different agencies have jurisdiction over different roads. If you live on a state road, contact
IDOT at 815-732-6251. If you live on a township road, you must contact your road commissioner
and place your request with him. The road commissioner must be the one to seek permission from
the county engineer before any sign is installed on a township road. If you live on a county
road, you may contact and place your request with the highway department. Grundy County personnel
will check the sight distance at your driveway to see if a sign is warranted.

your concern with the highway department.

What is the procedure for getting a new entrance to my property?

own permits. If you live on a state road, contact IDOT at 815-732-6251. If you live on a
township road, you must contact your road commissioner and place your request with him. If you
live on a county road, you may obtain an entrance permit request form on our Doing Business
page. Grundy County Personnel will check the sight distance and drainage requirements for the
location you request.

My mailbox was knocked down during the snowstorm. How do I get it fixed?
Occasionally during snow plowing, wet or heavy snow from the plow may push mailboxes over.
Agencies plow snow only on roads in their jurisdiction. If you live on a state road, contact
IDOT at 815-732-6251. If you live on a township road, you should notify your road commissioner.
If you live on a county road, you may contact the highway department and personnel will
inspect the reported mailbox after the roads have been cleared of snow and ice.

When do the weeds at intersections get mowed down?
Each year the Grundy County Highway Department sprays for weeds and brush along roadsides and
guardrail. Weeds under guardrail are sprayed in late spring. Weeds along roadsides are
spraying early summer. In mid-fall, the roadsides are sprayed again to control brush growth.
In the event some weeds pop up despite the control measures, our mowing crews cut them during
their maintenance program of mowing roadside ditches.

Who do I call about building a new house?
The Grundy County Zoning Department is responsible for all building permits in unincorporated
areas of Grundy County. Additionally, if a new entrance onto the road is needed, you must
contact the public agency who has jurisdiction over that road. If you live on a state road,
contact IDOT at 815-732-6251. If you live on a township road, you must contact your road
commissioner and place your request with him. If you live on a county road, you may obtain
an entrance permit request form on our Doing Business page. If you live within a municipality,
you must contact your municipality.

How wide is the Right of Way on my road?
The Grundy County Highway Department maintains roadway records for Grundy County and for many
of the townships. If you would like to view or receive a copy of these records, please
complete a Freedom of Information Request form located on our Doing Business page.

Who do I contact about the condition of the railroad crossing near my house?
All railroad crossings are the jurisdiction of and maintained by the railroad company who
owns the railroad tracks. The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) oversees all railroads in
the state of Illinois and has a complaint form for railroad crossings.
