Voter Registration – 10 ILCS 5/1A-16, 5/4, 5/5, 5/6
- Must be a US citizen
- Must be at least 18 years of age by Election Day: 17 years of age to vote in a General Primary if individual will be 18 as of the following General Election
- Must have been a resident of the precinct at least 30 days prior to Election Day
Regular registration is open year round except during the 27-day period just prior to an election and during the 2-day period after each election.
Grace period registration is an extension of the regular registration deadline from the 27th day prior to an election through Election Day. Registering In-Person – Two (2) forms of identification are required. One must show your current name and address. The second must show your name. These forms of valid identification shall include, but not limited to the following: driver’s license, state ID, birth certificate, student ID card, employee ID card, credit card, current utility bill, current W-2 form, applicant’s current contract or lease for a residence, state issued FOID card or postmarked mail delivered to the applicant at their current residence address.
Registering by Mail – Under federal law, citizens may apply to register to vote by mailing in an application. The applications are available in the Grundy County Clerk’s Office, or downloading the Illinois Registration Application here or from the Illinois State Board of Elections website at www.elections.il.gov.
If you register by mail, sufficient proof of identity is required. Submission of a copy of your valid driver’s license or state identification card that has your current name and address is required. If you don’t have either of those, verification by the last 4 digits of your social security number, copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, paycheck, government check, or other government document, FOID card, current W-2 form, applicant’s contract or lease for a residence, or postmarked mail delivered to the applicant at their current residence address can also be used..
When you apply for registration using the mail-in form, it must be postmarked prior to the close of registration. (28 days prior to the election) Mail registration form to the Grundy County Clerk’s Office at the address below.
If you do not provide copies of the necessary identification with your mail-in form, you MUST vote-in person the first time.

You may register to vote when you obtain a new Illinois driver’s license or State identification card. The Secretary of State will forward your registration to the County Clerk’s Office; or at any of the following locations. Registrar availability may be limited to hours of operation.

Yes, online voter registration was created by Public Act 98-115. An individual may register to vote or update his or her existing voter registration by accessing the home page of the Illinois State Board of Elections’ website at https://ova.elections.il.gov/www.elections.il.gov.

Grundy County residents voter registrations are processed through the Grundy County Clerk’s Office. You, the voter, can help maintain accurate registration records by notifying the County Clerk’s Office with a letter, if you or an immediate family member(s) have moved, changed their name or is deceased.
Every (2) two years the County Clerk’s Office is required by law to verify the accuracy of our voter rolls. We are required to mail new Voter Registration Cards to all active voters in Grundy County. The process is usually completed in odd numbered years.

10ILCS 5/1A-16.8 Automatic transfer of registration based upon information from the National Change of Address matches. (State of Illinois database matched against USPS information). An County Clerk’s Office shall automatically register/update the record of any voter who has moved into its jurisdiction from another jurisdiction in Illinois or has moved within its jurisdiction. If a voter wishes to reject the change of address, they must contact the County Clerk’s Office immediately.

If ANY change in your name or address has occurred, please remember to contact the Grundy County Clerk Office to update your registration.
However, even if you forget to update your information, “Grace Period Registration and Voting” is now available through Election Day in Illinois. Click Here for Grace Period Registration and Voting Information.
If you move within 27 days of the election in the same precinct you can vote a full ballot by signing an affidavit or completing the Grace Period process.
If you moved more than 30 days before the election within Grundy County, but moved outside your precinct, and did not transfer your registration, you may update our registration through Election Day and then Grace Period vote. Alternatively, you may vote for federal offices only after completing and address correction form.
If you moved within 30 days before the election outside your precinct, but still live in the State, and did not transfer your registration, you may update your registration to your new address through Election Day and Grace Period vote. Or you may choose to vote a full ballot in your old polling place after completing and affidavit.
If you moved out of Grundy County more than 30 days before the election and did not transfer your registration, you can only vote by re-registering from your new address through the Grace Period Registration and Voting process.
