Occasionally during snow plowing, wet or heavy snow from the plow may push mailboxes over. Agencies plow snow only on roads in their jurisdiction. If you live on a state road, contact IDOT at 815-434-6131. If you live on a township road, you should notify your road commissioner. If you live on a county road, you may contact the highway department and personnel will inspect the reported mailbox after the roads have been cleared of snow and ice.
If you know which township you live in, you can look up your road commissioner on the Township Officials page. If you do not know which township you live in, you can check on your tax bill or contact the highway department.
Different agencies have jurisdiction over different roads. Each agency is responsible for their own permits. If you live on a state road, contact IDOT at 815-434-6131. If you live on a township road, you must contact your road commissioner and place your request with him. If you live on a county road, you may obtain an entrance permit request form on our Doing Business page. Grundy County Personnel will check the sight distance and drainage requirements for the location you request.

The road commissioner must be the one to seek permission from the county engineer before any sign is installed on a township road. If you live on a county road, you may contact and place your request with the highway department. Grundy County personnel will check the sight distance at your driveway to see if a sign is warranted.
All railroad crossings are the jurisdiction of and maintained by the railroad company who owns the railroad tracks. The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) oversees all railroads in the state of Illinois and has a complaint form for railroad crossings. Call 217-782-7660.
