Duties of the State's Attorney

The office of the Grundy County State’s Attorney serves the people of Grundy County, Illinois.

Grundy County is situated 60 miles southwest of Chicago, and is a major pathway for cross-country highway travel via Interstates 80 and 55.

The law enforcement agencies with whom the Grundy County State’s Attorney’s Office frequently work to prosecute crimes are the Grundy County Sheriff’s Department, the Morris Police Department, the Minooka Police Department, the Coal City Police Department, the Channahon Police Department, and the Illinois State Police.

The office of the State’s Attorney is charged with a wide range of duties and responsibilities which include the following:
  • Felony, Misdemeanor and Traffic Prosecutions under state law
  • Juvenile Actions including Delinquency, abuse and neglect
  • Civil Representation of the County and it’s Officers and Officials
  • Victim/Witness Services
  • Bad Check Restitution Program
Other Services of the Grundy County State's Attorney's Office include: The State’s Attorney’s Office Cannot:
  • Provide legal representation to persons seeking a divorce or dissolution of marriage
  • Provide legal representation to persons seeking child custody or enforcement of a custody or visitation order
  • Offer legal advice to persons involved in “civil legal disputes” such as landlord-tenant problems, bankruptcies, collection of bad debts, adoptions, automobile accidents, income tax matters, or contract disputes
  • Lower your real estate taxes because you feel you have been unjustly assessed or taxed
  • Provide legal advice on how to start or operate a business
